Two people are dead after a freak accident Sunday night near mile marker 92 on north-bound Interstate 75.

According to Madison County Deputy Coroner Carlos Coyle, a man was pronounced dead at the scene after he stopped to render aid to the victim of an earlier accident.

A woman involved in the first accident, at about 7:24 p.m., and the man who stopped to offer assistance were outside their vehicles when both were hit about nine minutes later by an on-coming vehicle, Coyle said.

The woman was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center by Madison County EMS. The Fayette County Coroner then notified Madison County officials that she had been pronounced dead at the hospital.

The victims’ identifies were being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

The snow that covered local roads later in the evening had not begun to fall when the accidents occurred, Coyle said.

Interstate traffic was restricted in both directions by widespread debris and the efforts of a state police accident reconstruction team. By 10:30 p.m., however, at least two lanes were open in each direction.

Complete investigation of the confusing scene, further complicated by the snowfall, was expected to take considerable time, however.
