Trooper involved in crash on I-75

A State Highway Patrol trooper was involved in a crash on I-75 north between Troy and Piqua.

The crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. near mile marker 79 in the left hand lane, which is closed as troopers investigate the crash, according to dispatch records.

A black Honda Civic traveling northbound on I-75 turned into a crossover that connects the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate, and attempted to turn into the southbound lanes of traffic.

As the Honda turned into the crossover, a vehicle traveling in the left lane braked and a trooper traveling behind that vehicle rear-ended the car, troopers said.

Crossovers are marked as “for emergency personnel only” and have No U-turn signs on them, troopers added.

No one was injured in the collision, but there was severe damage to the two vehicles involved in the collision.

The driver of the Honda Civic that was turning around in the crossover will be cited for failure to obey a traffic control device. The trooper will be cited for assured clear distance.
