Report: Woman, daughters killed in January I-75 wreck weren’t wearing seat belts

The three Immokalee victims who died in a January crash on Alligator Alley weren’t wearing seat belts when their car plunged into a canal, Florida Highway Patrol investigators said in a newly released report.

Cecilia Douglas, 33, and her two daughters, Madison, 4, and Rylee, 3, died after a morning crash near mile marker 88 of Interstate 75. Investigators said Douglass rear-ended a vehicle in front of her, causing her 2005 Lexus sedan to crash through a pole and into a canal.

Investigators couldn’t determine what caused the crash, though witnesses noted light fog in the area. Survivors of the other vehicle said they were traveling at about 60 mph at the time of the crash. The report also noted that Cecelia Douglas “often drove at a high rate of speed and did not wear a seat belt.”

While the report doesn’t state whether seat belts would have saved the Douglas’, it notes that the failure to wear them “may have rendered (Cecilia Douglass) incapable of taking appropriate action” after the crash. An autopsy found Cecilia Douglas died of blunt force trauma and drowning. Autopsies weren’t performed on the two children.

The crash came under scrutiny after investigators found the Douglas’ crashed through a

Wesley Chapel, Florida — The Florida Highway Patrol reported the sad news that the driver of a car that crashed into a dump truck on Interstate 75 near State Road 56 has died.

Troopers say 61-year-old John Porter, of Wesley Chapel, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon. Both of his passengers — his wife Mary Ann and their 3-year-old granddaughter — are in serious condition at the same hospital.

Troopers say the Hyundai was heading south on I-75 in the outside center lane, just south of SR 56, when a dump truck that had stopped on the shoulder pulled out into the car’s path. The front of the car rear-ended the dump truck, causing it to deflect to the inside paved shoulder where it then crashed into the barrier.
