One dead after semi, car collide on Interstate 75 Alafia River bridge

GIBSONTON – A motorist was killed early Wednesday morning when a semitrailer truck and a car collided in fog on Interstate 75, sending the car into the Alafia River.

The collision occurred at 2:36 a.m., causing the semitrailer, an ABC Liquors truck, to overturn on interstate near the Alafia River bridge.

The accident closed the interstate for five hours, creating a miles-long traffic jam that at one point extended north to Dale Mabry Highway. At least two southbound lanes were reopened about 8 a.m.

The wreck occurred as both vehicles were southbound on the interstate what Florida Highway Patrol investigators described as low visibility conditions.

After the two vehicle collided, the semi overturned in the southbound lanes and the BMW skidded off the inside shoulder of the bridge and into the river.

The driver of the BMW died at the scene. The driver of the truck was taken to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries. The identity of the two motorists has not been released.

The accident caused a large portion of 30,000 gallons of alcoholic beverages to spill on the interstate.
