Novi woman killed in Interstate 75 crash in northern Bay County – The Bay City Times

PINCONNING TOWNSHIP, MI — A car’s collision with a flatbed trailer on Interstate 75 in northern Bay County claimed the life of a 52-year-old Novi woman.

About 9:08 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, a semitrailer was heading north on I-75 near Townline 16 Road when the 73-year-old male driver lost control on the snowy, icy road and jackknifed, said Bay County Sheriff’s Lt. James Chlebowski. The tractor portion went into a ditch and the trailer twisted, Chlebowski said.

“The travel portion of the roadway was partially obstructed by the trailer,” the lieutenant said. Two to three minutes later, Janie S. Savage, driving a Chrysler 300 north, did not see the obstruction and crashed into the trailer, Chlebowski said.

“The way the trailer was angled, it was kind of in an upward position,” Chlebowski said. “When the vehicle struck the flatbed trailer, it hit near the foot of the engine compartment, peeled it back and took the roof right off the car.”

Savage was killed instantly, Chlebowski said. She was alone in her vehicle.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

Alcohol was not a factor and Savage was wearing her seatbelt. Deputies were assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police troopers, Pinconning Township firefighters and paramedics from McLaren Bay Region and Northern Bay Ambulance.

Emergency responders were at the scene for three hours or so, Chlebowski said.

Northbound I-75 was closed from around 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Chlebowski said police are continuing their investigation and an autopsy is scheduled for noon today.
