I-75 closure causes fatal crash in Manatee – Sarasota Herald

Mikayla Brandt, 19, a passenger in a car traveling southbound on the highway, was pronounced dead the scene of the accident, which occurred around 6:20 p.m. near the State Road 70 interchange, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver and another passenger in that car were seriously injured, and four others in two other vehicles involved in the crash reported minor injuries.

According to troopers, Brandt was riding in a 2001 Saturn SL2, which was being driven by Nicholas B. Calton, 19, also of Naples. Skylar Rhoden, 19, of Bonita Springs, also was a passenger in that car.

As the Saturn neared the SR 70 overpass, he attempted to brake and veer left to avoid traffic stopped on the highway due to an earlier accident at the University Parkway overpass, troopers reported. But, the right front of the car slammed into the left rear of a 2013 Mercedes MG3, causing that car to spin and overturn. The Mercedes then hit a 2014 Honda Odyssey, as the Saturn spun and then rolled onto its roof in the median.

Calton and Rhoden were taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for treatment of their injuries.

Robert Fitzpatrick, 59, the driver of the Mercedes, and passenger Oonaghp Fitzpatrick, 57, both of Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, and Bruno Janoski, 66, the Honda’s driver, and passenger Victoria Janoski, 66, both of Lisle, Ill., all reported minor injuries.

It was unknown whether Brandt was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, troopers reported, while all others involved reportedly did use seatbelts.

Calton was charged with careless driving.
