WEST CARROLLTON — Two drivers confused by a lane split in a highway work zone
crashed within minutes of each other early Friday on southbound Interstate
75.
The second accident resulted in the death of Charles Rice, 65, of Farmington
Hills, Mich. Four others were injured in the accidents.
The first accident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. near the Central Avenue exit,
after three southbound lanes split with one narrow lane to the left and two
lanes to the right.
Matthew Vonbargen, 33, of Hamilton kept his 1996 Toyota pickup truck in the
right lanes, but veered off to the left, in between construction barrels.
He drove for another quarter-mile on a closed part of the interstate, past
more barrels and adjacent to a concrete barrier.
