Two drivers were sent to the hospital after a six-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on I-75.

According to Whitley County Sheriff Deputy Jeff Anderson, who leads the investigation, four tractor-trailers, a van and a sports car were all involved in the pileup.

The crash shut down both southbound lanes of traffic for more than five hours, and hundreds of drivers were rerouted onto southbound U.S. 25 from Exit 11.

Anderson said a Jaguar, driven by 63-year-old Joseph Wilford Jr., of Sevierville, Tenn., lost control on the wet road and crashed into a tractor-trailer driven by James Edward Holland, of Lakeland, Fla. That truck was hauling electronics.

“That’s what started this whole crash,” Anderson said.

Wilford suffered some minor injuries, and was treated and released from Jellico Community Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Holland was not injured.

Two logging tractor-trailers owned by Patterson Chip Company in Barbourville ended up involved in the crash as well, Anderson said. One driver, Bruce Helton, of Gray, was not injured. The other truck driver, Frankie Gray, of London, suffered “multiple injuries,” according to Anderson.

“He had back, chest and other injuries,” Anderson added, saying he was also transported to Jellico Community Hospital. A hospital

I-70 WB closed after possible fatal crash

The Ohio Highway Patrol is responding early this evening to a possible fatal crash that has blocked westbound traffic on Interstate 70.

The crash, just east of the I-75 interchange, has traffic flowing slowly in the left lane of westbound I-70, according to the OHP Dayton Post.

A semi and vehicle, both with heavy damages, are in the center lane of I-70, according to the News Center 7 crew on scene. A second semi off the side of the road has spilled a large portion of its cargo onto the highway.

The crash happened during a traffic slow down at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The traffic slow down was caused by a previous crash on WB I-70 between the airport exit and I-75 that was cleared at approximately 6:45 p.m., an OHP trooper told a responding News Center 7 crew.

Huber Heights fire and rescue crews responded to the scene.

OHP at possible fatal crash on WB I-70

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash early this evening that has blocked westbound traffic on Interstate 70.

An investigator from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office responded to the crash on I-70, just east of the I-75 interchange. The coroner’s investigator and OHP said one person is dead after two semis and a Subaru crashed there.

OHP Lt. Mark Nichols said the deceased is an out-of-state driver of a semi that rear-ended another semi. Shipping paperwork suggests the driver was hauling cargo from the east, possibly the Springfield area, Nichols said.

The semi of the deceased was carrying a heavy load and it left skid marks on the highway, indicating an attempt to stop before striking the first semi, according to Nichols.

No one else was injured.

The crash happened during a traffic slow down at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The slow down was caused by a two-vehicle crash on WB I-70 between the airport exit and I-75. No one was injured in that crash and it was cleared at approximately 6:45 p.m..

At 9:30 p.m., the westbound ramp to I-70 from Ohio 202 remained closed but was expected to reopen within the hour.

The left lane of WB I-70 remained open to traffic.

Stormy weather blamed in house fire, traffic crashes

Traffic on Interstate 75 north moves at a snails pace due to a series of accidents that occurred between the Red Top Mountain State Park exit and the Main Street exit. Most of the accidents were the result of a fast-moving storm that blew through Bartow County between 7 and 8 p.m. Wednesday. Neil B. McGahee/The Daily Tribune News
