Multiple Crashes Cause 5-Hour Traffic Backup On I-75

The weather is being blamed for shutting down I-75 in Whitley County for hours Tuesday.

A multi-vehicle crash involving four semis, a mini van and a car closed a section of the southbound side between the one and two mile marker Monday morning.

At 7:30 Monday morning a Jaguar reportedly hydroplaned off the interstate and into a guard rail. And then, police say, it was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Moments later, just a half mile down the road, a Dodge minivan suffered the same fate, hydroplaning, and then colliding with a semi.

Both crashes caused a chain reaction of smaller collisions, and it led to a massive pile-up, halting all southbound interstate traffic on the state line.

Police say one of the tractor trailer drivers and the driver of the minivan were injured.

Sheriff Colan Harrell’s deputies set up a detour through Williamsburg, but many people got stuck in the back up.

“We’re looking at books, we’re talking. And resting,” one of the drivers said. “We’ve had more rest today than we have in years.”

Another driver decided to take a walk.

Man killed in wreck on I-75 in Fayette County

A man was killed in a fiery crash early Wednesday morning on Interstate 75 in Fayette County, officials said.

The accident occurred at 1:52 a.m. in the northbound lane of Interstate 75, just past the Athens-Boonesboro Road entrance ramp at mile 104, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.

A Chevrolet truck drove onto the shoulder and rear-ended a tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder. The driver of the tractor-trailer was sleeping.

The Chevrolet truck caught fire, killing the driver, Roberts said.

The coroner’s office had not released the victim’s name by 10 a.m., pending notification of relatives.

Tuesday traffic sting on I-75 from Auburn Hills to Troy nabs speeders traveling up …

PoliceGeneric.png
AUBURN HILLS, MI — If you were driving Interstate 75 between Baldwin in Auburn Hills and 14 Mile in Troy, there’s a good chance you saw someone pulled over — unless the flashing lights were behind your car on the highway shoulder.

Eleven officers from the Southeast Oakland County Crash Investigation Team, comprised of police from Auburn Hills, Troy, and Bloomfield Township, conducted an “aggressive driving” enforcement effort between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday that resulted in 43 stops, 30 traffic citations issued and the arrest of one motorist with an open child support warrant.

Two drivers were stopped traveling at 104 mph and the majority of the ticketed motorists posted speeds between 15 mph and 25 mph above the posted 70 mph limit.

The traffic task force received a $5,000 grant in February from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police for their resource sharing and incident management program, the funds from which will be spent to offset the cost of Tuesday’s traffic initiative.

The driver of this flipped-over tractor-trailer suffered no injury when the driver lost control after trying to dodge a deer that had made its way onto southbound I-75 on Friday. About three hours after the crash occurred, investigators found the remnants of a meth lab near where the truck crashed through a fence along the interstate.

Now comes the news — albeit a lot sadder than yesterday’s news — of llamas being involved in an accident on I-75.

On Monday afternoon, a pickup with a trailer carrying four llamas crashed into a bridge over the Peace River in Punta Gorda.

According to Charlotte County Fire-Rescue officials, the truck’s trailer flipped onto its side after the crash.

One of the llamas was injured in the crash.

The other three appeared to be unharmed.

All four were taken to a local veterinarian hospital by Charlotte County Animal Control to be checked out.

Also, the driver of the pickup and trailer suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

It may appear that the llama apocalypse is upon us!

A Llamapocalypse, if you will.

4 llamas involved in car crash in SW Florida

Four llamas were evaluated Monday at a southwest Florida veterinary hospital after being involved in a crash on Interstate 75, authorities said.

Charlotte County Fire-Rescue officials said a pickup truck carrying a trailer with four llamas crashed at mile marker 164, near Punta Gorda, shortly after 2:30 p.m. The truck crashed into a bridge over the Peace River and the trailer tipped onto its side.

One of the llamas was injured, officials said.

“The animals were very easy to deal with,” said Charlotte County Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Dee Hawkins-Garland, although “they were startled and had been tossed around in that trailer.” Hawkins-Garland added: “I’ve been with the department for 24 years and this is the first time I’ve ever dealt with llamas.”

Photos taken by fire rescue officials show one of the llamas strapped on a stretcher, and another photo with two llamas in the trailer.

Three of the llamas appeared to be uninjured, officials said. Charlotte County Animal Control took the four llamas to a veterinary hospital for a checkup.

The driver of the pickup, a man in his 20′s, was injured and taken to a hospital. Officials said he suffered minor injuries and was in stable condition.

The Florida Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
