Brandon motorcyclist dies as troopers seek driver who fled crash

MANGO — A Brandon man who was thrown from a motorcycle after trying to avoid a collision with a car on Interstate 75 died Monday from his injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Authorities were still looking for the car’s driver, who drove away after the wreck happened Sunday afternoon.

Jeffrey Allen Fogel, 46, was riding west about 4:15 p.m. on Interstate 4 on a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle with passenger Gina Michelle Fogel, 43, troopers said. When the pair approached the I-75 interchange, they moved onto an exit ramp, which splits into two lanes to head north or south on I-75.

At the same time, a white four-door sedan bearing a temporary tag also was headed west and moved onto the same ramp. The sedan went into the southbound lane, then darted across a set of white lines into the northbound lane and in the motorcycle’s path, troopers said.

Jeffrey Fogel tried to avoid a collision and drove onto the grass median, troopers said. Jeffrey and Gina Fogel were thrown from the bike. Both were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where Jeffrey Fogel later died.

Troopers have only a vague description of the sedan. Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at (813) 631-4020.
