2 killed in separate crashes, several accidents close Detroit area freeways

The Michigan State Police were kept busy Monday morning covering a number of crash-related freeway closures, including two crashes that resulted in fatalities.

According to the MSP, one fatal crash occurred at northbound Interstate 75 near Clarkston in Independence Township while the other was on Interstate 94 and Masonic in Roseville.

The I-75 crash happened around 5:50 a.m. when an unidentified Clinton Township man in a Ford Focus lost control of his vehicle, slid into the left land and was hit by a Ford Van, officials said. He died at the scene.

State police officials said two other crashes also occurred in the same area involving fire department equipment which responded to the first accident but no one was injured in those crashes.

I-75 at Sashabaw was reopened to traffic at 10:39 a.m.

There were a series of I-94 crashes around 7 a.m. that may have caused a fatality. A 25-year-old man driving a pick-up truck traveling eastbound hit the right median wall, officials said. Sometime after the man left his vehicle and stood next to it, another two-car crash occurred nearby as police were investigating the first crash.

Police then said a third car attempting to avoid the second crash drove around a patrol car and hit the pickup, which in turn crushed the pickup driver between his vehicle and the wall. He was taken to a local hospital and is listed as critical. Police say alcohol doesnt appear to be the cause of the crash.

In addition, crashes also closed westbound M-59 at Crooks Road, westbound Interstate 96 at Wixom as well as eastbound I-94 at Little Mack.

The M-59/Crooks and I-96/Wixom closures were reopened to traffic by 9 a.m. while the I-94/Little Mack closure ended at 9:30 a.m.

Other crashes Monday morning included:

■ Northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) after M-39 (Southfield Freeway) involving two vehicles which closed the right lane.

■ Eastbound M-59 at Adams involving two vehicles which closed all but one lane at 8:30 a.m.

■ Westbound I-96 at Kent Lake Road involving two vehicles which closed the left lane at 8:50 a.m.
